Quick Photography Nerd Talk

When I made the decision to invest in a Hasselblad camera, I always dreamed of a longer lens even though I love the 80mm f/2.8. Back in July 2023, I realized that I wasn’t using the Mamiya M645 1000S that I had and decided to take it in to the shop and trade it in for a new lens for the Hasselblad 500C/M and picked up a Sonar 150mm f/4. Besides a couple of tests to make sure that it worked, it would be a month before a got to use it and I was amazed when I developed and scanned the film from one of the shoots. This is what I saw.

I’m sure this was shot wide open at f/4, and the separation of the subject from the background is amazing! This is not a look that I would aim for with every photograph, but see how well that the lens handles it is super dope. I’ve grown out of being a bokeh whore, but I do love to separate my subjects from the environment to make them the focus of the photographs, and to know that I can do that to this level with this lens is nice to know. I don’t think I’ve ever achieved this with the 80mm f/2.8.
